Merton is a Fairtrade Borough
In March 2009, after several years of campaigning, the Fairtrade Foundation declared the London Borough of Merton as a Fairtrade Borough. Residents, businesses large and small, the local council, community organisations, schools and faith groups have switched to using, serving and selling fairtrade products across the borough. These small changes in purchasing are significant in providing producers in economically poorer parts of the world with a decent wage and hope for a brighter future. Well done Merton!
What's so important about Fairtrade?
Fairtrade gives us the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives in the developing world. We realise that Fairtrade isn't the solution to the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, but it offers us an opportunity as consumers to alleviate some of the damage by giving producers an opportunity to improve their circumstances.
Fairtrade Merton Steering Group exists to promote Fairtrade within the borough of Merton and to challenge consumers purchasing decisions.
Find out how you can get involved whether you are a Merton resident, local business, faith organisation, school, community group or retailer. We know that a small change locally really does mean that lives are changed globally.
